Jenny Gillan-Powell, originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, moved to Houston, Texas at the age of three. Jenny graduated with Departmental Honors in 2003 from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In 2007, Jenny received her B.F.A. in Dance Performance, Cum Laude with Departmental Distinction from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. That same year, Jenny taught and choreographed in tap and modern dance for the Prodanza Festival in Castiglioncello, Italy. Jenny was then invited back to SMU as a guest alumni artist to perform the role of The Virgin in Yuriko’s re-staging of Martha Graham’s Primitive Mysteries. Jenny moved to New York City and joined Amanda Selwyn Dance Theatre in 2008. Jenny served as Rehearsal Director beginning in her third year with the company, and continued in that role for the rest of her six-year tenure. Jenny has appeared on the stages of Jacob’s Pillow “Inside/Out”, The National Theatre of Sarajevo, New York Live Arts, Central Park SummerStage, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Aventura Arts Center (Miami), Merce Cunningham Theatre, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, and the Orpheum Theatre (Omaha). Jenny has also performed in NYC with Salvatore LaRussa Dance Theatre, Joori Jung, kerPlunk Dance, and Bob Boross Freestyle Jazz Dance. In addition to dance, Jenny received her Pilates Apparatus and Mat Instructor Certification in 2011 from The Lab. Jenny runs and owns her business – Powell Pilates in NYC. Jenny loves linking the teachings of Joseph Pilates to dance and has a true passion for helping others improve their day to day movement, posture, and body awareness with this method.
