Nathan Trice HeadshotNJ SummerDance 2018 welcomes Artistic Director/Founder of nathantrice/RITUALS Nathan Trice. This contemporary modern master class is described as Athletic, Physical, Fluid and Gestural.

About Nathan Trice

Nathan Trice is the founder and artistic director of nathantrice/RITUALS, a project-by-project contemporary dance theater company based in Brooklyn, NY. The company’s mission is to reflect the importance of empathy, compassion and understanding, in the pursuit of global humanism. nathantrice/RITUALS has lived and developed its projects in residence at RestorationART for the past 14 years. Projects to date include: Recognizing Women Project, Summer Intensive Project and Strange Love: EPISODES. Since 1998 the company has toured throughout the US, Aruba, Bermuda, Japan and Hong Kong. In addition, Trice is the co-director of ChoreoQuest, a choreographer-in-residency program at RestorationART which provides choreographers of African descent in the five boroughs of NYC the resources to incubate and develop innovative new works. He also is the co-founder of Artist Co-Creating Real Equity (ACRE), an inter-generational, multi-racial group of artists and cultural workers committed to organizing for racial equity in the influential realms of art and culture, arts and education, funding, media, curation, casting and space. Chad Woodard, “Why the Healthiest Dancers Must Learn to Control Themselves”

NJ SummerDance 2018 welcomes Principal Director of Symbio Physiotherapy Chad Woodard. This master class will highlight the necessity to own your transverse plane and entail a discussion and movement practice to optimize rotational control to optimize healthy movement and mitigate risk of injury.

About Chad Woodard, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, CMPT, CSCS, FRCms

Chad Woodard holds multiple degrees and certifications in sports and ortho Physical Therapy. Strengthened by over a decade of clinical experience, Chad has developed the skill and reputation to be a widely sought after physiotherapist across the NYC area as well as internationally. While his clinical expertise is broad, Chad specializes in treating runners, triathletes, dancers, and men with pelvic floor dysfunction. His first love, however, is mentoring and collaborating with his exceptional team of brilliant physios.

Chad is also a competitive athlete. After several years as a professional dancer, he began his journey as an endurance athlete having competed in multiple marathons, Ironman level triathlons, and other extreme endurance events.

If you ask Chad, he will tell you that creating Symbio and witnessing the growth of this team is his greatest achievement–something far more important than degrees, certifications, or accolades. May he never forget, and may all who encounter the Symbio team know that joy and find that mutual growth that we have built.

Rokafella, Classic Hip Hop Dance and Culture

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 3:00 – 5:00 pm

Rokafella HeadshotNJ SummerDance 2018 welcomes Hip-Hop Artist and B-Girl Rokafella. “Classic Hip hop dance” is a term used to describe the styles that created the foundation of what is seen today in popular concert choreography and dance competitions. Breaking, Popping, Locking and Up/ Rocking emerged in the late 70’s in NYC. In the 80’s and 90’s other social dances appeared in response to the new rap music trends including New Jack Swing. This class will introduce students to basic movements in each of the styles with brief historical references that will help position today’s trends in a continuum of urban expression.

About Rokafella

Ana “Rokafella” Garcia is a NYC native who has represented Hip-hop dance professionally over the past two decades. She co-founded Full Circle Prod Inc- NYC’s only nonprofit Break Dance Theater company with her husband veteran Bboy Kwikstep. Together they have generated theater pieces, poetry, a documentary highlighting the Bgirl lifestyle entitled “All The Ladies Say” and original music based on her experiences growing up in Hip-hop’s Mecca. She is hired internationally to judge Break dance competitions based on her mastery of the classic Hip-hop dance style and she teaches unique workshops aimed at evolving and preserving its technical aspects. The NYC public, private schools and universities as well as local community centers present her workshops to aspiring dancers as part of mentoring programs. Presently she is an artist in residence at the American Tap Dance Foundation, an adjunct professor at The New School and former member of the Bessie’s Dance Performance Award committee. She has been featured in pivotal Rap music videos, tours, film and commercials as well as choreographed for diverse festival concerts such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. In the Spring of 2017 she launched ShiRoka–a T shirt line collaboration with Shiro Japanese Graffiti writer to add to her Earring Designs which can be found at the Bronx Museum gift shop and online. Rokafella is a multi-faceted Hip-hop artist who references street and Latino culture as her foundation.

Kelly Buwalda, Nutrition for Dancers

Kelly Buwalda HeadshotNJ SummerDance 2018 welcomes Certified Health Coach Kelly Buwalda. This workshop will address special demands of being a dancer – athlete and artist. This interactive lecture will ignite appreciation for one’s own body and its unique needs, aim to demystify trends and fad diets, address body image concerns, as well as provide a foundation of healthy practices for years to come.

About Kelly Buwalda

Kelly Buwalda is a Certified Health Coach and founder of NYC-based Kelly Buwalda Nutrition & Wellness. An Indiana native, she attended Hope College (Holland, Michigan) on a dance scholarship and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in dance and psychology. She continued her education at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and upon graduating was hired as summer faculty at Joffrey Ballet School. She has created “Nutrition for Dancers” workshops for Carolyn Dorfman Dance, New York Dance Project, and Detroit Dance City Festival, and has enjoyed presenting wellness workshops for a variety of companies and organizations. For over 13 years Buwalda has been a Teaching Artist/Choreographer at Jacques d’Amboise’s far-reaching non-profit National Dance Institute. She recently conceived and directed At the River’s Edge, NDI’s 2018 Event of the Year, which included over 200 children performing to live music at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. Throughout her years in NYC she has enjoyed performing at numerous venues across New York City and internationally with Julio Rivera, Erin Dudley, Mei-Yin Ng, and in her own work. Buwalda integrates her experiences as an artist, athlete, and educator to inform and inspire her clients towards transformation.
